Pop In for Postcarding 

We'll  be offering  several “postcarding parties” at local libraries in September and October. We’ll send postcards to “low propensity” voters – those who haven’t voted in the past several years – reminding them of the importance of voting and to use the official ballot drop boxes to return their ballots. Friendly handwritten postcards have proven to be an effective way to increase voter turnout. Let’s help get out the vote at these nonpartisan events

Spend an hour or so with fellow  League members for some good conversation while you write . We'll provide the  postcards, messaging script, addresses and stamps.

Washington of Secretary State Steve Hobbs on On Election Security 

Thursday, September 17 — 5:30 p.m., Coupeville Recreation Hall.

On National Constitution and Citizenship Day,  Secretary of State Hobbs will discuss his office's efforts to ensure our state's election integrity and current court battles to protect our election rules and processes against federal overreach. Hobbs was just elected president of the National Association of Secretaries of State,  Sponsored by the Whidbey Island Democracy Club. 

Let's Discuss Big Money In Politics

Thursday, Sept. 17 -- 5-6:30 p.m., Cotton Building, 607 Water St., Port Townsend.    

As the League works to defend democracy and empower voters, we see corporate and dark money in politics eroding the influence of voters and diminishing their voices. A survey by IPSOS, a major global market research company, found that more than 70 percent of Americans want to get big money out of politics.

A Constitutional Conversation with Andrew Siegel

Friday, September 25 -- 7:30 p.m., Whidbey Island Center for the Arts (WICA)

Seattle University Professor Andrew Siegel researches and writes about constitutional theory, contemporary constitutional and public law, and American legal history. He is a nationally recognized expert on the United States Supreme Court. He is a co-author of The Supreme Court Sourcebook and his scholarship has appeared in a variety of influential journals. He teaches courses involving constitutional law, torts, American legal history, civil procedure, and the United States Supreme Court.

This is a WICA event. Our League will have a table with information on voting, and we will be giving away pocket copies of the U.S. Constituion (for those who are able, we're asking for a small donation to cover our costs). We're also planning a pre-show auidence-participation reading of the U.S. Constitution in Zech Hall. Stay-tuned for details.

Sex, Gender and the Assault on Student Privacy:

The No Hate in Washington Campaign Agaist Initiatives 001 and 638

Thursday, October 8 -- 6:30 p.m., Nordic Hall, Coupeville

Join us for this presenation by Linden G. Jordan, a therapist focusing on trauma and LGBTQ+ issues and an expert on the science of gender.

This November, Washington voters will vote on two initiatives that would directly affect kids, families, and public schools across our state. The LWV of Washington believes both measures are flawed and would cause unintended harm to the young people they claim to help. LWVWA urges voters to reject Initiatives 26-001 and 26-638 and support policies that protect student privacy, safety, dignity, and opportunity.

Jordan, representing the No Hate in WA State campaign, holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology and taught psychology at Skagit Valley College. He also has a law degree and is a former deputy prosecuting attorney for King County. Through personal experience and extensive research, he has become an expert on the science of gender.

 L26-001 removes common sense protections for child abuse victims and forces schools to out LGBTQ+ students to abusive families. IL26-628, the most extreme measure of its kind in the country, could put girls at greater risk of harm by requiring invasive, medically unnecessary genital exams to play sports.  These requirements would apply to transgender and cisgender girls.
