About Us

About LWV of Whidbey Island

LWV Whidbey Island is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization that helps Island County residents participate in democracy through voter education and issue advocacy.

We do not support or oppose political parties or candidates. We do take positions on public policy issues after member study and consensus, then advocate for solutions we believe serve the public interest.

What we do locally

  • Host nonpartisan candidate and issue forums (often on Zoom)
  • Publish and share voter education resources
  • Support civic education and youth outreach
  • Study public issues and advocate based on League positions

Our Mission

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, increases understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

  • We study before we act — preparation matters.
  • Democracy depends on informed citizens and shared responsibility.

History

The League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters formed in 1920 in the wake of women’s suffrage, with a focus on civic education and informed participation in democracy. The League has remained nonpartisan, emphasizing policy—rather than party—through study, consensus, education, and advocacy.

LWV Whidbey Island

LWV Whidbey Island began in 1976 as a small group committed to nonpartisan civic engagement in a politically diverse community. For decades, our local League has hosted well-known public forums on candidates, ballot measures, and community issues; conducted local, state, and national studies; and supported transparent, effective government in Island County.

We’re proud of our history — and focused on what Whidbey needs now.
